Can I seriously request a refund from having learned French? I expected to use it to talk with elegant Frenchmen but like 70% of people in France my age are nafris or blacks, and even the white ones are thrown into colère if I accidentally omit a syllable for a word with formerly aspirated H or do an accidental incorrect liaison, or don't know the birthplace and life of random revolutionaries from their village. Most Frenchies where I live are white and they don't speak elegantly so I have trouble understanding them when they speak since they don't pronounce it quite how you learn it in textbooks and on Youtube so I just perpetually struggle.

But yeah, French's reputation as a "fancy language" only comes from the fact that for a long time it was a language only spoken by the educated elite and such it was shaped by that and of course as time goes on and it's a language spoken by everyone it evolves into something less fancy and less refined.

Also a lot of immigrants speak pretty clear French since they often speak it textbook style.
