>>212508262There's no way to know since this system has always been in place, but it's likely that there would still be massive turnout by Western standards even without compulsory voting:
1. Singapore is not a big place, everyone lives within a block or two of a polling centre, so you don't have the issue in the US of old folks having to drive 30 miles to get to vote and deciding its not worth the trouble
2. People genuinely enjoy voting here. You get a public holiday (again unlike the US where you depend on your employers' good graces to give you time off) so there's a festive atmosphere. Its also the one time in every five years of our shitty existence that we can exercise our very limited democratic right of expression, so people, especially if they are disgruntled, make it a high priority. They are not as apathetic as voters in Western democracies, people here are delusional and genuinely belive their vote matters even if they can swing one seat away from the ruling party, they will take it
