I know some russians who are old enough to have witnessed 90s russia as adults and from what theyve said 90s russia was miserable beyond belief and a terrifying place to live. Part of putins popularity is that he took over the literal day the 90s ended and russia became a fairly stable country again. Even those who dont really like him support him because they have nightmares about the 90s returning
