I'm pretty sure that's not accurate. I drive for work in a northern municipality, and paved roads are much more common. It's mostly the smaller villages that have dirt roads and between larger villages.

and we have twice the amount of road per square km than you
and if you'd live in somewhere like rural minnesota, you would know that a gravel road stays in a far better condition than an asphalt road, if it's not constantly maintained, and it's easier and cheaper to repair
it makes no sense to pave a road that sees almost no traffic and just rots away in a winter or two

i dont understand the problem here. the US has an insane amount of gridding(idk if there is a better term for this) in its road networks, especially in the prairies. this is visible too north of the 49th in saskatchewan and manitoba. you dont need to (or should even bother to) pave every single connecter road between the major highways that go east/west or north/south. this is only a problem when major arteries of transport are gravel and cannot facilitate 18 wheelers at highspeeds or at all.

Because it was all planned out by engineers? Examples of organic development in America are extremely rare and pretty much all in the oldest settlements of the East Coast. Out in the midwest like in that pic it would have been settled in the 19th century.

no he is right. you might not do much work on these roads since its mostly logging roads, i camp around and sometimes do illegal offroad driving in all of norway and sweden. sweden is great in that for every km of prepared highway there is a couple of 10+ km dirt roads branching out into nothing. best thing is when the forest roads from one valley ends just a km from the forest roads from the other valley, then we make our way between them instead of going 200km around.

no. boulders are common some places and nearly impossible to find in others, something to do with how the glaciers receded at the end of the ice age. ponds/lakes yes are avoided but are not that common they disrupt the straight line that much. hills no, the great plains is very flat. any change of elevation is usually so subtle you wont notice or just so uncommon it hardly changes any of the roads. creeks get bridges built over them, patches of trees get clear cut if its cheaper than going around(usually is in the prairies.)

correct approach for the skandinavians. asphalt decays fast when frozen.
our northern cities cover roads with asphalt, but they crumble to pieces and get repaired every year. pretty much waste of budgets.
