They want to have a connection to their African roots but don't actually have any knowledge of African languages or names so they just make up random stuff that they think sounds african

There was a brief period of time where Americans considered France "classy," which is where you get some of the D' and De- prefixes on African American names. Otherwise they're taken from African names, I forget who the Kwanzaa ones are but that's the main source.
