Cantonese sounds marginally better, and apparently its also closer to what ancient Chinese sounds like, whereas Mandarin is some sort of chinko-mongo-qingo amalgamated frankenstein of a language. So I'd say cantonese.

Why even bother with chinkspeak if you're white though? When you speak English to a lesser creature (such as a chink), you emanate power and superiority of a white coloniser, but if you decide to lower yourself unto its level by speaking its animalistic babble, it will surely start to despise you. Coloured people are just like animals. They need to know their place.

mandarin isn't the "modern Chinese" many in the west like to think
it isn't that it's not close to spoken chinese 1000 years ago or something

all language will have sound shift, that is the nature of humanity, not just chinese, Cantonese is influence by surrounding cultures
extra tones might come from vietnam, it is possible, the special cantonese characteristics is that grammatically it is close to spoken chinese from late tang era

likely that is the last time canton had the largest population increase by ratio from northern migration, such that subsequent migrations didn't effect the further transition to cantonese closer to mandarin

mandarin for me is the cooler chinese, it not like any other language because it is a class language, mandarin was spoken by mandarin, a class or bureaucrats, the natives in all regions are not native mandarin speakers until very recently, only in generation after the 1970s you get people who only speak standard tv mandarin where they didn't or couldn't pick up their provincial mandarin/ regional chinese

so spoken chinese is never easy categories as some posters like to think belittling chinese culture every chance they can

and ofc cantonese mandarins also spoke mandarin, obv, and they produced a lot of mandarin so the region is never unconnected to the central government, but geography does protect the peasant from cultural syncretism with the north

many western countries like uk had a time when they try to enforce a specific accent, received in uk and mid-Atlantic in the us, just imagine mandarin the same way today, it is on tv and in schools all the time, you need special permission from ministery of culture to have programs in whatever other chinese, and they rarely give it out so many regional varieties will die

people understand china have a lot of population so thinking that somehow everyone always spoke mandarin is just beyond insane

go shangainese for the best balance of actually having a considerable number of speakers while still being so minor no one bothers to learn it

really? I guess it makes sense considering Shangai has always had a large number of foreigners, but I never see people even mention it in these cantonese x mandarin threads

shanghainese have a lot less tv/movies to learn from, so it's very hard to pick it up remotely, you have to go native as they say
