Bucharest is not similar to Bucharest in any shape, it did not developed together as it is very far away. Bucharest has more than 2.5x the population density with a very tiny old core and just all kinds of buildings on top of each other everywhere and giant abandoned industrial zones. Just check it out on a satellite map it kind of looks like a Tokyo in the Balkans. Budapest is not without faults and far from the clean and organized state of a city like Vienna but not comparable to Bucharest either. I've been to both

I was comparing the state of upkeep rather than the overall aesthetics, because of course you can only do so much when you got a gulag caricature of a city such as Bucharest. The city has cleaned up massively in the last 10 years. Still is an eyesore because of the architecture and abundance of concrete

I didn't expect to find gypsy shitholes full of graffiti a stone's throw away from the centrum in Budapest, even though they are a given in Bucharest. I expected Budapest to look more like Krakow, Warsaw or Prague than Belgrade and Zagreb desu, but it doesn't

I was born here so I remember how the city looked pretty well that is why I think it is pointless to act neurotic about the faults because I have seen how much it has changed and eventually it will get there. For example the Bartok Bela road between Gellert and Moricz used to be a pretty shitty street when I was growing up full of abandoned stores and the square would stink of piss. Nowadays it is one of the nicest streets in the city in my opinion. A lot of major squares, places, parks got renovated in the past 10-15 years, a lot of neighborhoods got "gentrified", a lot of buildings got renovated and there is currently a renovating boom in District 6. They planted a lot of trees greenery in the past few years. You have no idea how bad the state of the place was in the 90s

I've been to a lot of cities and to be honest, maybe I'm biased but overall I like the city. There are a lot of faults (lot of rust belt zones, road quality in general, every train station except one looks like we just got bombed or something, etc.) but overall imo it is a fun city. Drinking a beer at the Garden of Philosophers overlooking the city or just walking across the Margaret bridge at night is a pretty nice experience even if you come from a first world country. There was a gastro boom worldwide like 10-15 years ago so there are a shit-ton of bars and restaurants nowadays. Every district has decent areas to live with the nicest (II, XII, XI) being really good imo. You can also go and hike a bit in the hills and smaller mountains nearby, they are very accessible. The biggest problem is other than the mentioned above is that infrastructure like tunneling does not happen so that is going to be a problem. But the city itself is livable imo

Nice place, you bourgie.

This isn't an issue of Budapest vs Bucharest. Hungary overall has a better quality of life with cities that look more pleasant, spacious rather than conforming to the 1960s definition of "functional" of cramming as many souls per sq m. Despite this, there's still a lingering air of Balkanic nihilism (disrepair, neglect). Romanian city planning is austere and depression inducing, as if the structures were built and arrayed in such a manner to induce fear on top of what the oppressive system was doing.

>Despite this, there's still a lingering air of Balkanic nihilism
Yeah of course. Austrians for example have a much better mentality. They have this idea that there are these set of rules that should be kept, it is not very hard and if you do it you will get rewarded. Here similar concept exist but rules are kind of made with the assumption in mind that not everyone will keep it. I don't know if it makes sense. Mentally we are not there. Also Hungarians in general tend to be extremely frustrated and/or stressed people. But there is no point of getting hang up on this. Hungary will never be Austria and it is what it is. Things can still become better long term even if things are never going to be perfect because that would require a different mentality and more social cohesion

Very nice place overall, even gommieblocks with red tiled roofs to fit with the vibe. Bucharest doesn't have anything like that, of course there's the Victory square with posh commieblocks and high rise corporation buildings but it looks as soulless as Warsaw.

I like Pecs and Szeged more than Budapest, especially Pecs because it's hilly and has a big forest to its north.

>Hungary will never be Austria and it is what it is
Well...
You also struggle with the same masses of rural gypsoids dragging the country down in elections. I'm glad Romanian cities stopped looking like balkan gulags, but the countryside and small towns are still in a very bad condition.

I'll give them props for working towards restoring the historic, pre ww2 look of the castle as much as possible but yeah if not for the mayor finding a clever legal loophole they would have sold a big part of land to the saudis(?) to build 420m tall skyscrapers where there absolutely should not be any skyscrapers (especially not designed/owned by the same guys who fucked up Belgrade waterfront)

Lel those are not commie blocks just not as decorated.
Buda in general is greener and more pleasant.

That is oversimplification of the issue. Yes, the government was/is most popular in rural villages. But they also won all the expensive suburbs outside the city like pic related. Only recently their population begin to plummet. Before that they had a very wide range of support among the larger population, even if they were most popular among the poorer areas. Only recently things began to change. I don't expect any big breakthroughs though, especially in things like wages. Czechia, Hungary, Romania are all within 5% now in terms of average wages, stuck in the middle income trap. Only Poland is doing significantly better than the others in the region. They have much better educational outcomes, more Western software companies there, they have their own companies now even. If we finally get a new government that does not anger the already frustrated population with the propaganda, steals less and invests more into infrastructure that is already a giant win, it would be foolish to expect better than that.

I don't mind skyscrapers. Imo the MOL tower should have been 20-40 m taller. Technically with its current height it is not even a skyscraper, missing 5-6 meters. It should have been taller and they should have put 3-4 more there in that region and there would be a nice cluster.

>they would have sold a big part of land to the saudis
Both the Saudis and the government backed out too quickly which made me think they actually changed their mind. That area right next to the train tracks is not that valuable imo. Skyscrapers are very expensive so they need to be in a prime location. I think they did not really knew the city that well and are actually glad that the local government stopped them. But that is just my theory

Agree on the MOL tower being a bit short and that it should be part of a nice cluster of at least 3 more towers.

And yeah, south BP is where I'd put my skyscrapers too if I was chief architect (like in the ~20 year old Csepel-Manhattan concept) not Zuglรณ.

Isn't there like a wastewater plant there? Along with all the industrial wasteland. Csepel would be an absolutely ideal place for skyscrapers based on just location if we disregard everything regarding the current state of the district but imo that sort of investment would require so much money it is never happening. With the MOL Campus they had the opportunity to do it because they did not need to clean up a giant area with toxic soil and all that. Plus the environment of just giant road was better suited than the village and commie block environment of Csepel

Magyar men and women look like they belong to separate species. I've seen a few groups of Hungarian tourists and while the women are often pretty, the men look like hulking relict hominids

A backward people. Slovenes don't respect Hungarians just because they have the great city of Budapest.
