>>212664820 (OP)You mean pre-9/11 New York? It depends what you define as "peak Western civilization." New York is less of a capital of the West, but of the world. In the last 25 years, median household income has more than doubled, violent crime is down 15%, property crime is down 15%, subway system is less reliable overall, but has live tracking now. Unemployment rate about the same. Basically entire city has access to good parks/nature of some kind now. Air quality is twice as good.
On the flip side culturally it's been gentrified (no SOVL), median rent has more than tripled, and schools are still pretty bad.
I think in the zeitgeist the 90s and very early 2000s we were the undisputed champions of the world still. That's changing quickly as we revert to a multipolar world, which has been the norm for most of history. The unipolar superpower of America is gone, which was really only possible since the US could avoid the devastation of WW2. If the US were to return to that status we would need another WW3, except we'd need to not be involved until later on like in WW1 and WW2 which doesn't seem plausible at all. Even limited nuclear exchanges would ruin everything, so not really worth the risk desu.
