>got force fed and deepthroated chinese cultural stuff by mom
>good news: after trying chinese school for some time, mom didn't think it was right to make me keep going there
>bad news: it's bc she thinks chinese school isn't challenging enough, and basically homeschooled me on chinese with literal prc propaganda coursework that's super challenging
>"stop acting like a retard son, we know you're smart, try your best anon"
>"mom if ur gonna force me to learn a really hard asian language, why can't it be a cooler one like japanese or korean"
>"because you're fucking chinese, and i'm ur mom, stfu"
>anyways, fast forward years
>first year w/o being taught chinese
>use duolingo to learn japanese (spanish got boring), since everything better costs money and i'm fucking 16 and broke during covid
>turns out they give everyone the same course regardless whether u had chinese parents who forced u to learn chinese, or not
>have to handwrite the same fucking characters i learned in elementary over and over AGAIN
>ไธ€=1, ไบŒ=2, ไธ‰=3
>FUCKING PUTA SON OF A BรšHO I ALREADY KNOW ALL OF THIS
>and WHY is everything in kana only, even obviously Sino-Xenic vocab, its so confusing

Rn, what I often do is go into online dictionaries, paste in (the shijintai forms of) compounds my mom forced me to learn, and just see what they're pronounced in Japanese on'yomi.

Because Japanese culture is so much cooler than Chinese culture.

And yeah I do know about "hurr durr Chongqing so cool", etc., but most of it's propaganda. It's such a meme that even my mom agrees. I've been to China and much of it's just a facade. Chinese anime is so ass compared to Japanese anime. More tech isn't always a good thing either.

And no amount of "innovation" is ever going to change the fact that China bans almost every website and censors all criticism.

Even among Chinese culture, I have a slight preference for Taiwan over the Mainland. Like Wade-Giles > Pinyin (Pei-ching for Beijing, T'ai-pei for Taibei) and Traditional > Simplified.

>>212670871
The reason I'm so fucked up nowadays is because my parents and the public education system tried to frame me as mentally ill when I was growing up. Long story.

Look I'm not all that culturally divorced from China, I can literally read this, as well as watch and understand like 75% of Chinese-language media

My Japanese is so ass compared to my Chinese, like I can't even watch anime without subs/dubs, or even JAPANESE subs (idk if they even do that)

>>212672519
Oh I don't actually know Spanish either. At least not beyond Duolingo level (and we all know how much of a fucking joke the owl is). If you plopped me in some rural, impoverished, non-touristed corner of Spain, Mexico, or South America, I'd probably get myself killed in a jiffy for being "un chino"

In middle and high school, had to choose a language, and I retardedly chose Latin. Was actually gonna do Italian bc I was deep into classical music/piano (I wonder how?) and "wanted to understand opera", but my mom somehow talked me out of it.

Most of my Latin classes ended up being Chinese or Indian, esp. higher level. Meanwhile the pretty Italian girls in my class were taking Italian and making pesto in class, while we made unseasoned ancient custard and ogled over the ruins and parchment of dead people.

It was the hardest of all languages of school, and while it definitely helped me "learn" (if you can call it that) Spanish and French later on, I might as well have simply learnt Spanish and French the proper way, which for instance includes conversation skills Latin classes under-teach.

My parents all wanted me to have plain neat hair. Wouldn't even let me grow it out when I wanted to. My aunt also served as my barber for the first 12 or so years of my life (and the barber I switched to, who remains my current barber, is also Chinese).

They think I'd look ass with long hair since I'm a 5'5" midget, despite me never letting me try it. Not even once. In my household I'm pretty sure men having long hair is as taboo as smoking weed or doing heroin.

Incidentally, now that I think of it, even the women in my family have short hair, at least on my mom's side. I wonder if I were born a women if they'd have forced me to get short hair or given me bowl cuts.

That's the thing about my parents that's always pissed me off in general. You can say "it's because they love me" as much as you want, but sometimes people need to go out and live life lol. Like, I'm sheltered/virgin af, still living with my parents as a rising college senior, and commuting to class, when I'm aware of people my age or even younger moving to NYC and/or prostituting themselves on OnlyFans.

OK yeah China has these, I've tried them, but in practice they're almost always ass compared to what the US has. Think that's just a natural consequence of being a socialist dictatorship.

Now, there IS some decent stuff in the Chinese language, including some of my favorite movies and music (e.g. "Secret" starring Jay Chou, about piano), but it's from Taiwan. But then I begin to wonder if I'm only attracted to "Secret" in the first place because I was Chinese and had a mom who made me play piano, and a dad who blasted Taiwanese mandopop in the car. Like if I were Japanese or white would I still have liked "Secret"?

No nrn, I'm talking when I was younger, like until HS

They had this dumbass "minutes" token thing

>daily piano practice = +15 minutes
>daily Chinese HW = +20 minutes
>fold clothes = +20 minutes
>misc good chores (e.g. lawnmowing) = +minutes on a case-by-case basis
>use family laptops w/o permission when left unlocked = -5 minutes, or more depending on severity
>swearing = -10 minutes, or more depending on severity
>sperging out = -all minutes, and further punishment (e.g. grounding) depending on severity

Ended up figuring all kinds of tips and tricks
>disabling auto lock when the iPad case was closed / inactive to stealthily continue using it at night
>using Siri on my iPad to go "Bing images hot women" or whatever, even when it was locked
>browsing the internet on the TV since the TV wasn't locked
>taking advantage of the fact that "family vacations = free iPad time"

Eventually was able to abuse the very sped shit my parents had imposed on me by bargaining an additional "have a good day at school w/o sperging out = +20 minutes"

Thankfully they pretty much abandoned the dumbass token shit once I got my phone in HS (though they could still ground me for screwing up, e.g. when sperging out during COVID). Eventually even got my own laptop for the 2020-21 school year since my school was recommending it

See my point? I'm ashamed my country's authoritarian. Sure it might've been "great" or "innovative" or whatever, but they've done stuff like killing people for writing down emperors' names, multiple ideological pogroms, female footbinding, and castration. And then when the Communists took over the whole country basically turned into an Orwellian dictatorship that I'd struggle to defend even on my most tankie of days.

>>212673693
It's not over by any long shot BTW. Recently they forced me to break a lease for this coming senior year because they found out living in an attic was technically not legal even though we're all broke college students and no one - even the landlord - gives a shit.

My parents FREAKED THE HELL OUT and refused to pay for it, which led to a multi-day argument. "OMG what if there's a fire?" And when I bravely volunteered to work a menial job this summer (and beyond) to rack up some of my own money so that I could pay for it myself, they even threatened to withdraw money from my bank account.

Had to apologize profusely to the dudes I was gonna room with and even they were like WTF. Ended up finding a replacement in time, which made me relieved, since I did NOT want to get involved in some shitty lawsuit my mom was forcing me into, and screw everyone over. (Even a LAWYER we consulted told mom to let her son screw around.)

Most of that history was burned down during the cultural revolution, what's left is nothing but the remains. I'm not kidding; the original Xiaolin temple was obliterated during those years, and the temple that stands today is nothing but a remake.
Unironically, the best examples of legacy Chinese cultures are in Taiwan and Hong Kong, nations with their own sets of flaws, but more a sad reminder of what China could have looked like.

Remember that China gave us COVID too.

For me it was absolutely devastating. I was 15, lost my chance at participating in extracurricular activities, gaining work experience + funds, getting my driver's license (for 1 year), and dating that Italian cheerleader chick.

Had to spend a year shut up at home with parents. And they were like "oh why don't you go out and take a walk with us, you need fresh air" like I was 3 or something. On like the first day of school closures of March they were like "get used to this anon, this is gonna last the whole year or even more". I scoffed at them at first, but they proved to be right. I think this was one of the biggest contributing factors to me developing doomer tendencies.

But the COVID response itself? It pushed me towards EXTREME conservatism - att I was wrestling with conservative thoughts, my mom was still forcing me to attend SOME kind of church service, I was like repressed lgbtq.

I just wanted a space to be myself and invent my own identity. But my family was making things hell for me, and as quarantine dragged on, their overprotectiveness absolutely depressed me. My parents became my blue governor's biggest cheerleaders, and plauded the restrictions incessantly. They wished the US could be more like China.

I grew to despise my Chineseness, my blood, my black hair and black eyes, and could hardly even bear to look at myself in the mirror. I begged my mom to move to Tennessee because things were normal there. At one point things got so intense that my mom even had to bring me to the hospital.

I swore NEVER to forgive China. I swore NEVER to support Democrats or Progressives. Yet sometimes I remain tempted to put on a maid dress or side with Team China. And everytime I snap out of my daze, I feel incredibly disgusted with myself, the way I'm allowing my primal instincts to take over.

Use a resource for teaching Japanese to Chinese people, or hell, use any resource that isn't Duolingo or another meme app that aims to gamify language learning.
Duolingo sucks in general and sucks particularly hard for learning Japanese.

I wonder how much of a market there is for people like OP

There's an online course called "Canto to Mando" developed by a Cantonese Canadian designed to help speakers of only Cantonese learn Mandarin

I'm sure there's plenty of resources for Chinese people to learn Japanese. Most people learning Japanese are actually not from western countries, but from other Asian countries, particularly China and Korea.
The potential issues are whether he actually managed to learn Chinese to a good level after all that strict schooling, and whether those resources are easily available in the US.

Anecdotally most Chinese Americans hardly know the language beyond basic enough proficiency to keep in touch with relatives

Unless they're actually diehard passionate about it, which OP doesn't seem to be

Pretty true and normal (even if lamentable) for all heritage languages I think, especially among zoomers

Real Chinese American here
I can actually read at high school level. Just don't be lazy and stop blaming your parents. You are responsible for all your shortcomings
This is so embarrassing, how did you grow to be even a functioning adult? If you can't do it just give up, you have nothing to prove.
