Communities seem fragmented because they aren't formed geographically anymore. My community comes from my work, my religion, my club sports team, my hobbies. Earlier in life it came through school etc... these are all kind of "single points" that I travel to and meet people and maybe hang out with them later if we become friends. My geographic neighbors might say hi while out on a walk but it never goes further than that. People aren't as open to it, and there's nowhere to really encounter them in a long-form way.
