there's a motorway service station in austria, near the slovenian border, modelled after american diners from the 50's. it's been operating for at least 10 years but the restaurant area is almost always empty and the food looks atrocious. people only stop there to piss or charge their ev's. the interior is kinda funky though.

My neighborhood as a kid used to be really connected. I think part of it was that there were a lot of activities and a lot of kids and families around. I really do think it’s a demographic thing, at least in part, ethnic and cultural diversity seemed to just lead to fragmentation. People don’t really have any frame of reference for dealing with one another or shared experiences and views to bond over. Communities seem fragmented because they aren't formed geographically anymore. My community comes from my work, my religion, my club sports team, my hobbies. Earlier in life it came through school etc... these are all kind of "single points" that I travel to and meet people and maybe hang out with them later if we become friends. My geographic neighbors might say hi while out on a walk but it never goes further than that. People aren't as open to it, and there's nowhere to really encounter them in a long-form way.
