Learning about American schools was fascinating. I don't know if it was just Texas, or if it applies to all of the US, but "no child left behind" means that a kid just had to pass a single test and that would be the bare minimum to boost their grade to a passing one for 1 course.

Before I started school, I would stay at my grandparent's house while my mom and dad worked. I wanted to be like my older siblings who were already in school so my grandmother bought me a school desk that she put in her living room and she would make report cards for me. She has severe dementia now and doesn't remember who I am.
