World history is mainly written from a christian perspective. Im not too religious but i grew up around religious folks (christians obviously) and they cannot comprehend that have done horrible things to non christians. Its probably the same with muslims who cannot comprehend that islamic expansion wasnt all smiles and wholesome.
If those 5.5 million were christians it would probably be the most discussed genocide after the holocaust. Obviously its a horrible series of events and nobody deserves to suffer because of their identity and the perpetrators hopefully burn in hell.

I looked up some discussions on the Cyprus issue from the Greek side. We are taught that Greeks were murdering Turkish civilians in broad daylight and trying to drive us out of the island and we invaded to save our people. Greeks are taught that Turks invaded the island for no reason other than the fact that we could and murdered countless Greek civilians. I think growing up through these education systems that paints the other side as literal devil will not solve the issue for either side, neither now nor in the future. There will never be a consolation or closure.
