But then in the 2020s the Online Safety Bill/Act proposed to do the exact same thing, and added even more draconian legislation against other non-porn content, and yet literally nobody cared.

Reddit has ONLY JUST started posting about it now they are seeing the consequences. Right now there are multiple threads with hundreds to thousands of comments across Reddit, both UK and non-UK subs, complaining about the new age ID policies.

But it's too late. Where the fuck were these people 4 years ago? Why didn't they care then? For some reason, everybody refused to believe it would happen so they just didn't do anything to stop it.

This is called anarcho-tyranny: where the government is authoritarian with censorship and control of political discussion and simultaneously employs a permissive approach to actual crime - a mixture of "tyranny" against free speech combined with lawless anarchy for everything else.

You can steal bikes, shoplift, pickpocket, snatch phones from modded E-bikes, flytip, deal drugs, drive through red lights, commit petty fraud, set up money laundering sweet shops across central London - whatever. Most of the time quite literally nothing will happen and you won't be sent to prison or punished.

But when it comes to freedom of speech online, or the ability of the government to spy on its population, this is where the UK chooses to have authoritarian laws, literally the worst of both worlds; soft-sentencing for serious crime with a totalitarian approach to our internet freedoms.
