I don't seem to really grasp the contents on Tae Kim... Like, I kinda understand it, but when I see the examples in another section that builds upon grammar building blocks learned before, I struggle to understand the sentence. I've even tried to review some sections and while it kinda helps, I would need to do it with EVERY section, so, basically, read the guide two times. I'm about to enter the Special Expressions part of the guide and am considering just batting an eye in every chapter without really understanding them and going on to read よつばと! while doing the DoJG deck. Am I just really retarded or is this normal?

Languages are difficult and take time. Japanese Especially so if you're coming from a European language. Instinctive understanding comes way later. Its tough early on, and it wont get any easier anytime soon.

Keep reading grammar points until you recognize them in context and dont have to anymore. They build up over time.

As the idiom goes, "if you're going through hell, keep going!"

The best one can do reading grammar books in a foreign language is to become a good linguist, you might start understanding it but very similar to how a mathematician understands math, very analytically, not spontaneously like a language should be. Therefore it is completely normal to be struggling (since languages are completely made up) and the best course of action is to just acquire language through input as soon as possible. Consider Tae Kim or Cure Dolly or whatever as just a way to make your inputting (your real learning) more comprehensible... Also just as a side note Anki is not a learning tool, so don't treat it as one like I did (´・ω・｀)

Haven't been here in a while cause of life, but how often have you guys used ChatGPT for Japanese or English related questions, if at all?

I've been helping a friend that's been learning Japanese with grammar, and it seems like ChatGPT can handle a lot of questions that I'm unsure on, but maybe not for advanced ones.
It's unfortunate since I doubt AI will ever be able to offer answers to questions that require a very nuanced understanding of the language, but to most learners, that doesn't really matter much.

I haven't personally used it, but from what I saw people post in here you can get both correct answers and incorrect answers which look correct

Without kanji it would be way harder imho. I'm not some master but i've found learning kanji pretty easy, I have my anki deck sorted by kanji so i only get words with familiar kanji and like 2-4 new kanji a day. After you get past kanji blindness it's actually fine.
I wish I'd known it wouldn't be such a big issue like a decade ago because all the reddit horror stories of kanji turned out not to be a big deal at all

One of kanji's virtue in learning Japanese is that they sometimes enable you to guess the meaning of unknown words.

The following is an excerpt from an article of a tabloid paper. You don't have to comprehend the article itself, but I just want to point out some examples that favors what I said above.

Japanese void of kanji is like,

It's probably possible to remove kanji but I think it would honestly become worse and harder to understand so it's best if it's kept

I know which one I prefer reading. The cool pictures one. Much more compact for VN textboxes too.

They'd have to introduce a new script or modify kana because kana enough isn't clear. Spaces would help some but there are still too many homonyms

Of course it is possible to remove all kanji from Japanese, just as North Korea, South Korea, and Vietnam have actually done.
However, as a native speaker, I prefer Japanese with kanji.
