sorry for bursting your bubble pal but portugal only actually had a few forts here and there in the east indies, save Goa, which the dutch completely robbed us of like taking candy from a baby, and in brazil we held the coast only pretty much, the rest of the country came much later by merit of full fledged brazilians. sure, we pioneered the maritime route to the east indies around south africa, and we did spread some minor influence throughout asia, but the spaniards did way more actual ruling than us. we were glorified pirates at the end of the day.

It's not. Go read up on our methods of exerting influence at sea, and compare them to those of actual pirates. The difference is we weren't doing it on a whim and actually had some semblance of strategy (not always), everything else is indistinguishable. You can sugarcoat it if you want, but I won't let my thai friend be misled by the likes of you. There are plenty of other things to be proud about in our history.

What are you talking about? The Portuguese definitely had influence in the india ocean. The Portuguese defeated the ottoman fleet which gave the Portuguese control of the Indian ocean for decades. The Portuguese established diplomatic bases in Iran, Omen and India while also helping the Ethiopians with their war. For such a small country they actually did a lot. Read up on your country's history.

You are utterly insolent. I didn't say we didn't have any influence, but it's very overblown. The Indian Ocean was at a time ruled by portuguese sails because we were european pioneers in getting there, and our naval technology was superior to that of those parts. Once other europeans caught wind of what we were doing, our influence diminished considerably and never really recovered from it. And save for Goa and maybe Diu, we only had mere forts here and there, the backbones of our pirating ways. We preyed on the helpless, and avoided peers. Extortion, pillaging and barbary were the name of the game. The Spanish were much nobler and administration-minded.

Every European country preyed on the helpless, what are you talking about? Portuguese were explorers, they were to first to chart Africa, the first to reach asia and make contact with them, established diplomacy with countless amount of countries before the other euros could and even fought against countries large than them. Yeah Portugal's colonial ambitions weren't as big as the other European powers, but for being such a small country with a small population it did a lot so stop trying to diminish the country's accomplishments.

Your ignorance betrays you, you're not addressing a fellow american. Said "diplomacy" was often leaving able-bodied men of the conquered coasts hand and earless. Those accomplishments you've mentioned were of note, but they left a rather small footprint in history, apart from cartography (greatly improved upon by others). The biggest contribution I can think of is the romanization of the vietnamese language, and even then it was a jesuit, which I consider to be their own thing, separate from Portuguese ambitions.
>Every European country preyed on the helpless, what are you talking about?
I specifically said nobl-er referring to the Spanish. They also committed atrocities, but not as many, and as spread out as us. Are you aware that for a time our name and flag in the region were synonyms for the vilest of beings? How is that for diplomacy?
Note that the tone of the OP is what we're addressing. But in any case, it's not a history to be paraded around mindlessly, like you're doing. You wear it like an accessory, stop it.

There's no point even arguing with you. I could list out everything the Portuguese have accomplished and you'll trivialize it by saying "it's a le small footnote in history" which is just being disingenuous. I agree that the Portuguese did commit atrocities, but exaggerating it in what seems to be an attempt to eclipse the atrocities the other European powers committed especially the Spanish is you once again being disingenuous. im honestly convinced that you're not even Portuguese, you write like you have some form grudge against the country.

Your ignorance is palpable. The Spanish at least upheld some honor, the portuguese on the contrary were much more barbaric, you should go count the recorded incidents on local populations along the coasts of the indian ocean, and read up on accounts of them. The Spanish at least drew blood when it was necessary for them to uphold their order, we just did it for the kicks.
I didn't trivialize anything, and you yourself argued our feats were disproportional to our size, so we're not arguing in absolute terms in which the portuguese are absolutely a footnote, objectively speaking. We never "ruled over half of the globe", we were bullied by european peers and we were underhanded in almost every aspect of power exertion.
