Elephants in war were very unpredictable and clumsy. They can make one big charge and then they just hang out and do their own thing for the rest of the battle. The elephants often get scared and charge their own men or run away. Several times the Mongols (and later the Mughals) used camels with flames on its back to scare the elephants and crush the Indians in battle.

Elephants also require a ton of feed and maintenance at all time. There's a reason why elephants were not widely used in war.
