Because I have many hours in Japanese, Italian, and French because I listened to a lot of music in those languages, I watched movies and anime. They also have some 30-day course for the people that really want to be spoon-fed and get advice and feedback every step of the way, but they're not selling any "secrets" that aren't already in the public guide. Sure, learning it through repeated exposure is better, but in the beginning, when you know nothing at all, you basically either have to use Anki or suffer hundreds of hours of ALG baby talk before you can graduate to shows for small children. You won't perfectly understand it because of Anki, but you'll have at least a faint idea of what's going on.

Well yeah, anki is a grind. I only was able to knuckle down for like 3 weeks before I got exhausted and bored with Japanese at 20 per day. But in that time I familiarized myself with like half the words I would ever see in a given sentence. I think in the long term doing something minimal like 5 words a day maximum, really targeting mining words that matter to me personally, that I will remember the context of, will really level up ease/consistency and be less distracting from my input.

More than that, I think keeping one’s anki really spartan, and actually mining from your input day one, is probably really helpful since you have context for the words from your memory.

No, I actually tried doing ALG in Japanese for about 165 hours, and although my understanding is a lot better and the language is slightly more complex, it's still not enough to understand shows for little kids. I know 165 hours isn't that long, but I just couldn't keep watching the Comprehensible Japanese videos alongside shows like Miffy, I got burnt ou (I was doing like 3 hours daily), and stopped having as much time. I actually haven't been studying Japanese in a while because of this, even though I could theoretically just spend less time on this, like 1 hour daily.

I recently finished a C2 Turkish course, so now I'll resume learning Estonian and Sumerian.
I am pretty indecisive about what course to take in my uni though. Options I've been considering are Russian, French, German, Japanese, or Latin. Pretty basic because they don't have other languages I'm interested in.

I've started learning jap when I was stuck there in 2020 during covid. Now I'm at 4-5k hours and pretty decent and happy I did it.
