I'd be willing to bet all their growth as a religion is in brown countries. Even for mormons the birth model in 1st world countries is unsustainable. They aren't able to recruit new members in the USA, it's literally all family based. Conversion happens in SEA and SA.

I think they know that their congregations in the first world will inevitably get too decadent to sustain the religion purely through birth. Gotta branch out the only place it's possible.

There was a period of time when Mormon missionaries showed up to my childhood home practically once a week. I grew up in western New York where Mormonism began despite it now being associated with Utah and the southwest. About a mile or two down the road from our house was some supposedly famous Mormon farmhouse where I think Joseph Smith, the guy who founded Mormonism, had lived or something like that. Apparently lots of Mormons would come from all over to see this house and while they were in the area they'd go do their missionary rounds.

My parents would typically politely tell them that we weren't interested and sometimes add that we were Jewish to get them to leave (we aren't). One time they let an elderly Mormon couple inside because it was nearly 100 degrees out and they looked like they were going to keel over any second. We gave them water and they immediately broke into an extremely rehearsed sounding missionary spiel and started pulling all sorts of pamphlets and brochures out of their bags. I was pretty young but I can remember going upstairs to avoid the Mormons only to come back down to the kitchen hours later to find them still sitting there talking to my parents.

I know this is a joke reply but I think people see mormons (particularly younger ones) in a more sensitive light. Most mormons are barely above the knowledge and discipline of regular old baptists. Missionaries are just kept in teens most likely seeing the world for the first time. They often have surface level understanding of their own book and many were pressured by their families to go on mission. I honestly feel a bit bad for them, but all things considered Utah is actually well kept and a nice place to live apart from some areas of SLC.
