The first CV90 prototype had a 25mm gun iirc.

nah. at some point you'll inevitably run into the idea of having a mobile direct fire platform that can exploit enemy weakpoints and support infantry. and then you'll run decide to armor it a bit so it can shrug off nearby artillery explosions and small arms. and then maybe from some bigger stuff from the front. the very idea of a tank is unavoidable. it will always exist, in some shape or form.

you basically just described western tank doctrine lol. yes, tanks mostly act as QRF that react to enemy pressure and exploit gaps that open up in the enemy's defence. what we're seeing in ukraine isn't proper use of armor. especially not by the russians (granted, ukraine as a post soviet country also doesn't use them exactly as it should, but they're still doing much better, perhaps in part because they have less of them). the russians are stuck with the soviet doctrine's armor spearhead idea. they use their tanks like they're cavalry, charging at enemy positions without infantry support.
