That's about to change. Valve introduced a ranking system for their major tournaments that applies points to LANs of virtually any size (I think the minimum prize pool is like $10k to be ranked). Tiny lans like EPICLan in the UK are gaining traction because bigger teams now want to go to them to farm ranking points. I think iSeries is coming back too.
