Let's Plays were just becoming a thing, and for people outside of Sweden he was the first real exposure to someone outside of their own country they could connect to, which is always a fun novelty, while also being a part of their interests.
It's always funny to see people complain about modern youtubers being slop while talking about the "good old days" of people like PDP and Markiplier, when the people who weren't children back then were criticizing them for just screaming into the camera and making funny faces to appeal to a child audience. He's said multiple times that his content was flawed and limited but for some reason it was perfect back then and kids loved it because loud and repetitive.
