I never thought I would ever say this but after a fairly long time in japanese post secondary education as a yuro where my classes have been entirely some combo of japanese/chinese/korean, i consistently find the chinks to be the most palatable of the bunch. they occasionally have some totally repulsive mannerisms and complete lack etiquette but every single japanese and korean ive met invariably acts as if they have been so hammered by life that they are just waiting to die
ive only really every interacted with educated people but after a few years i find the chinese here to be much more reliable researchers and just generally more pleasant to talk to and drink with
why is this?

Interesting if true. Japs/Koreans are more depressed and checked out while the Chinese have SOVL and vigor?

japanese are just autistic bugmen that shortcircuit if you break one of their 1874930 unwritten rules

koreans are a failed nation sadly but the people are mostly normal if not career focused

chinese ive noticed are way more inviting regardless of their status, though there are filthy rich families just like chaebols which dont consider anyone equal

this is my experience. it could be a consequence of my field so i would be curious to here what other japanons have to say, but i can say with certainty that the chinese, which bar the japanese are the most numerous of my peers, are the only ones that are truly excited to study and to interface with the material that we learn.
occasionally this can result in a certain naivete but, if/when they overcome this (sometimes they dont and end up failing out), they are better researchers with more novel and attractive research topics. when im at a 飲み会, they are the ones that want to engage in discourse on our subject and to learn from eachother: they want to live it, to breath it whereas for the rest it is merely what they need to do to secure their future.

said, the japanese seem often scared to give their opinions and koreans want to forget about their studies outside of the classroom. one thing ive observed too is that the chinese want to benefit china. maybe its a consequence of the fact that the japanese and koreans are disillusioned with their government but ive NEVER seen a non-chinese east asian study what theyre studying because they want to positively impact their nation. once again, theres an element of naivete here, but the chinese are often excited to study and discourse because they think they will be able to improve china's position if they do well enough

sorry I can’t contribute to the thread since my experience with people from those nationalities has been extremely limited and it would be unfair to make any broad claims about them based on such minimal interaction, I just wanted to say that’s a cute webm you posted

My entire experience is just a little over a month each in Japan and China as a tourist but I also thought chinks were the more human. Nips have a bunch of silly little ritualized behaviors they cling to and it's rare to get any contact out of them that isn't composed of a zillion layers of politeness and fake servility. Funnily enough most of my more genuine interactions were with bored grandpas who apparently no longer gave a fuck.
The Chinese on the other hand ran the whole spectrum from annoyed-you're-there-service to big smiles and chattiness. Awful manners in general and sometimes overly direct but they felt much more similar to us, at least at surface level.
