They only became brown in the 19th century at the same time as they were becoming the majority. They hated that they had ended up with so much blood from the natives and the blacks and naturally continued to see themselves as white, merely with corrupted blood, as their society and culture hadn't changed.
It's only since the middle of the 20th century that they came to terms with it by imagining themselves to come from a hybrid people born from mixture, a completely ahistorical romantic myth.

But that's literally how it went. The "colonial mestizo" in the way people understand it today as a cohesive sociological group is a complete fantasy, a modern invention.
And the other belief I've seen some have that Latin Americans are essentially Indians is even more insane.
