also, just comparing these 2 pictures:
germans are using more profesionnal looking gear with helmets and shit while soviets are dressed in rag coats
colored vs black and white photo also makes a difference
judging by faces alone germans don't look significantly older

It might have been due to poor nutrition. I have seen a picture of finnish draftees exempted from service due to mallnutrition and they looked like 12-15 year olds despite being adults. Couldn’t find the picture for now though. USSR had famines before war while germany was already rather developed despite the economic issues.
