Both are incredibly daunting. I speak advanced English and still German is hard for me. An average Ukrainian doesn't speak any non-Slavic languages, learning German for him would be a very difficult task and majority of people I know failed to reach B1 (one of the most basic levels, you can't even enroll into trades with language like this). My wife is Japanese, so I travel to Japan every year, for at least a month, although sometimes I've gone for three months. I really like being there; it's a very comfortable country where everything is clean and orderly, and everything works well for someone like me, who comes from a noisy country where things work... so so. I don't immerse myself in Japanese society or master the Japanese language, and I don't intend to because I want to be the exotic foreigner forever because I feel that if I learn Japanese and immerse myself in Japanese culture, the magic will end. I imagine that to anyone who feels trapped in Japanese society, the unique language and the difficult writing system must make it seem difficult to escape.
