How come people pretend these dilapidated type of neighbourhoods are the norm for Britain and not some extreme outlier?

why would an abandoned building get costly maintenance, what for? that would be waste of money
don't sweden know the concept of a ghost town? in formerly industrialized countries there are dozens of cities people leave in droves and no one wants to live in so obviously many buildings will be just left to rot because even demolishing them would take too much money than it is worth (no one would buy even an empty building plot there)

British and Dutch urban planning is pretty much the same, just British houses are on average much older so they're harder and more expensive to maintain properly. Most Dutch terraced housing comes from the post-WW2 development while in Britain it's largely 19th century stock.

ah
yea detroit is run down, phrasing it like that puts things into context well.

I guess my confusion comes from seeing london last year, it's literally the most pleasant and exciting city I've ever seen, it also didn't feel unsafe or rundown ANYWHERE even in the outskirts. I don't understand why brits complain so much when every part of the UK I've seen was beautiful and so much of life in the UK is a straight upgrade from life in the USA.

Food in the UK is almost always better than in the US. like food standards in the USA are just fucking terrible.
General quality of life is higher there. The prices are actually often lower than what we pay in the USA.

The big downside is salary of course. But purely comparing cities in the USA to London, london almost always wins.

No, not at all. NYC is less safe, it's FAR dirtier, it's more expensive, it's harder to get around, and it's just not as exciting as london on most days.

In my opinion the only pros are the intellectual scene in nyc having a slight edge on london (although it's very close) and, of course the salaries being much higher for most jobs.

property become fucking expensive, so it rent, so is construction

that shithole of a building in Poopieshire on Loo town would cost you
- 3000 pounds to rent
or
- 350.000 pounds to buy
- 350.000 pounds to repair

thats 700k for a derelict builing in depressive town to buy and repair minus the all planning headache and waste of time.

No wonder smaller towns ans cities are dying in UK.
Also, UK is nowhere East Europe tier, as pioneers of suburb living even before yanks white flight, British countryside is insanely comfy and beautiful. It's just British grade B and C cities needs redevelopment and attention. Middlesborough, Grimsby, etc

Never understood the anger at British towns and cities looking a little soulful tbqh. You can walk 10 minutes from a city center and be in wonderful, lush, green countryside which doesn't exist in suburbanized hellholes like America.

It literally took me the same time to walk from the center of Newcastle to pleasant rolling moorland on the outskirts as it does for me to drive to work in the morning (2 hours) and I didn't even break a sweat because the environment is so beautifully temperate - a perfect 60-70 degrees

I felt bad for them the entire time, Newcastle is clearly up and coming once again but everyone I spoke to felt like they were basically being looked down upon by Londoners and unable to actually revitalize their city the ways they wanted. It is actually a great tourist city for history buffs, I hiked partway down Hadrian's Wall and day tripped to Lindisfarne from there

Yet I never met any other international tourists the entire time I was there - the only other brown people I met were locals

This isn't an outlier. High streets are dying all over the country because they only open during office hours (i.e. when everyone is at work) and it's a pain in the arse to find parking. Online shopping or dedicated retail parks are much more convenient, the only high street shops that can survive are vape shops and bookies (and those are probably just fronts for money laundering).

Newcastle literally sits on one of the busiest domestic rail lines in the UK between Edinburgh and King's Cross. Yet Edinburgh is an international tourist sensation for basically 10 blocks of "historic city" and young people flocked there in the thousands despite Newcastle being less expensive and closer to London by an hour by train.

Trains are expensive, slow and unreliable outside of London. Most tourists that fly into London won't bother venturing outside of it much because of this. If they do want to do day trips from London then they'd probably stick to places in the South like Stonehenge, Windsor Castle, Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, etc. And while Newcastle isn't too far from Scotland, if someone is visiting Scotland then they probably want to stay in Scotland.

Newcastle and most other Northern English towns are just too far out the way for most tourists, unless someone is willing to spend a couple of weeks doing a tour of the whole island.
