Of all the languages that could've been the international auxiliary language, the worst possible option was chosen.

English is one of the official languages here. Tertiary education is in English. Schools teach English since kindergarten. In many schools, science and maths are in English. Commerce is primarily in English. Courts can use English, particularly if they want to cite Common Law. Our Parliament can also use English in debates.

Would you rather have to learn six thousand Chinese characters? (Granted that English is up there, though.)

It's actually pretty elegant. Due to its size and flexibility there are many words to describe similar things with different connotations in a way that doesn't exist in other languages. Spanish for instance is a lot more autistic and you're going to struggle to write something as descriptively as you can in English. This is why English lit is unparalleled.

But I speak a few so I can tell the difference. English absorbed the vocabulary of the entire Latin/Germanic world both, who else can say the same in terms of linguistic variety?

Do you speak a few at an equally fluent/native-like level? Seems like perhaps you struggle to write something as descriptively in Spanish because... you don't speak it as well as English.
