I read somewhere in my Brazilian travel book that Brazilians have a lot of trouble understanding Portugual Portuguese. Don’t know how accurate that is though

How is Swiss/Belgian French different from metropolitan French (aside from septante, huitante, and nonante)?

Most Brazilians today have Portuguese lineage and it's a shame the two countries don't work together more, like the US and Britain.
Also Brazilian Portuguese > Portugal Portuguese
The Portuguese spoken in Portugal sounds like a bastardized hybrid of Spanish and French.

Every region is essentially Portuguese heritage + something. Our food is 90% Portuguese or mixed, our festivals are 90% Portuguese or mixed, 90% of our people have a lot of Portuguese blood.

But due to our shitty education and leftism for so long, some people hate Portugal now (yet they are the first one to travel there).

The South is the exception I think, because even though they are still mixed with Portuguese, they pay more respect to their Italian, German, Polish, etc., heritage since it's more recent, and I guess more important part of their history. To a certain extent, but not similar intensity, the same happens in the Northern region and their indigenous heritage (although its minimal in most people), and Bahia and their mostly african-brazilian population (which is also a meme since most are still pardos)

Brazil is basically Portugal with a different accent and more minorities, but no one really cares about it these days. People don't think much about Portuguese ancestry or surnames, because that's just seen as typically Brazilian. Brazil is like a settler colony that went wrong because it assimilated too many minorities (blacks) in the 1800s and 1900s, to put it simply

For the longest time, I had Brazilian friends tell me there's no racism in Brazil, that blacks and whites get along better than in the USA. Then I did some research and found out the Brazilian government funded white Europeans immigrating over to breed out the swarthiness centuries ago (the same government who also bought slaves from the Dutch).

The main difference is that we didn't had segregation at all, while the US had it up until the late 60's.
That's why racial tensions are much higher there, here people are already used to see people from other races so nobody cares.

He was lying, obviously. People say that because the regime brainwashed everyone into believing Brazil is some kind of "racial democracy" where ethnic conflicts supposedly don’t exist but there's a lot of racism here. If there weren’t, we wouldn’t need anti-discrimination laws. What we don’t have is a tradition of state imposed segregation, but that’s mostly in name. People still segregate themselves based on phenotype, social class, place of birth... Interracial relationships aren't even that common. Most mixed-race people come from older generations, they usually can't even point to the last European or Indigenous relative in their family tree. And yes, there were efforts to turn Brazil into a "Nova Europa" by bringing in European settlers, but that didn’t go as planned and only the South and São Paulo ended up with a white majority, mostly because of heavy investment in attracting settlers and displacing Indigenous amerindian communities. I hate Brazil so much. I don’t understand how anyone can feel patriotic about this shitty country. I still can’t believe my relatives left Europe for this place

I know about WW2. My family left a place that doesn’t even exist anymore. There were other countries in Europe like Spain, the UK, Sweden, and overseas options like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the US. Coming to Brazil was just a mistake since there were better choices in the early 1900s. But whatever, it doesn’t matter now

This shit is why picking a third language to learn is such a headache. English and Spanish truly are the best, every speaker of each language understands each other and they're userbase grows by the day. Meanwhile other "languages" are like:
>Bro the language is not mutually intelligible between countries that speak it, even regional dialacts within the same country vary and don't necessarily understand our version
>Oh yeah in this other country they mix it with another language effectively creating a new, totally different one
>What's that? You don't know our language? Don't worry bro there's always someone who speaks English and our native language is dying anyways from a combination of mass immigration and our youth being such cum brains from watching media all day that they only speak English anyways
Don't even get me started on the autistic and arbitrary grammar rules some of you people have holy shit...
