To be fair, the upper class used that wealth to open factories and subsequently increase people's prosperity.

Making fat stacks
And fat stacks it made. But like most corporations they didn't think of the long term consequences, such as hordes of corporate conditioned brown people who can speak god's language.

Initially the goal of the british east india company was just to send spice back to the UK

and it wasn't actually a very ambitious operation either. They didn't expect it to become the behomoth quasi-state that it became, nobody could've predicted it

thats bs lol, the average factory worker during the empire's "golden age" could barely scrape by, hell, i'm pretty sure at least i remember reading somewhere that at least ~20% of the population couldn't even fucking feed themselves.

Yet they still left their villages en masse, because even the most miserable textile worker was much better off than a peasant farmer.

They definitely had some inklings since they started lending out their mercenary army in the Madras Presidency and were successful thanks to good drilling and consistent pay of the native soldiers.
Clive basically ruled Bengal like a personal fief a la Cortes after the conquest of Mexico. The Battle of Plassey took place in the aftermath of the shattering of the Mughal Empire that started at Karnal in 1739 and the subsequent sack of Delhi that totally laid it low.

>mughal and marathi leaders are greedy and capricious
>local merchants don't want to deal with them
>british east india company turns up, operating on ledgers, spreadsheets and contracts - a language the local merchant class understand very well
>they turn to the east india company because it's easier to do business with an evil, foreign icorporation than jeet nobility
The end goal was to get raw materials out of India, back into a Britain in the grip of the Industrial Revolution. Britain then made the goods with cheaply-sourced raw materials, and sold goods back to the colonies. If you were a lord or merchant in the British Empire, it worked out great. But peasants on both sides got fucked badly. And the Indian nobility played their part, whether they realise it or not.
