The Anki never fucking stops bros I do 200 cards, I go to sleep, I wake up, and there's 200 more cards. It's never ending. Even if I stopped adding new cards I'd have reviews to do and I'll be doing them for the rest of my goddamn life anyways time to do my Anki

Agreed on heavy reading, and Anki shouldn't be the base, but I still use it for words I know won't come up often.
My lang has a specific word for the thread of a screw, different from thread as in clothing.
I'll throw things like that in and review 20ish cards a day.

Basically review words that score high in unfrequent but useful, and let the rest of the words come through input.

>My lang has a specific word for the thread of a screw, different from thread as in clothing.
hey german has that too, thread as in clothing is "Faden" (not sure if "thread" alone can mean spool in english, but for that we'd always say "Spule" i think, instead of "Faden"), and the threading of a screw is "Gewinde," as in, something that's windy, a winding, kinda cute

what is your aim in memorizing words like that? do you just like having a large, diversified vocabulary or is it practically relevant to you?
Anonymous Canada No.213139318 [Report] >>213143449
Does anyone here study linguistics ? I was under the impression someone that understands the grammar and has enough memory for a vocabulary could learn any language to fluency in a reasonable time frame (1-2 years).
20th century scholars would know several languages, I suppose one has to dedicate their lives to the task.

A tradie needs to know his trade in another language.

Personally I use university textbooks (i.e. Physics, Chemistry, etc) in my TL a lot in my studying - mostly because I feel like it would be beneficial to know as I need to know the stuff in my career.

Both, I was putting together a bed with my GF last year and was really struggling with some of the vocab, screw, bolt, thread, nut, washer, flathead screwdriver, socket wrench, etc.
There's a big class of vocab that is useful in day to day life, but doesn't come up often in books or movies. Anki's pretty good for that stuff.

ah yeah that makes sense. i had this thing when i visited another country and knew the language pretty well but found out i'm retarded when i went grocery shopping there and realized i never bothered to learn food words, because if you usually learn a language at home and watch content relevant to your interests, you don't really care for learning vocabulary like that. turns out, i couldn't ask where the fucking carrots are because i didn't know how to communicate what a carrot is or gesture it out (that'd probably get me in trouble)

She's Brazilian and we live there 90% of the year, I'm just back home visiting family at the moment.
I had a fun freeze up moment at the store when I went to buy some mangos and the cashier asked me what type they were so they could input the price/kg.
I had never considered in the tropics they have different types of mangos, to me they were a single thing like pineapple.
I just shrugged and told him I was a gringo and had no clue, he laughed and put in whatever type was cheapest.

Visiting/Living in a place isn't necessary for learning, but it's a great way to show what you didn't realize you missed.

The Martian is a good first real book IMO
The vocab isn't too complex and it's all either conversations or his diary so the tenses are simple.
HP has a lot of narration and "dripping dingy alleyways with creaky mahogany doors" artistic type vocab that's not the most helpful to learn early on.

I think the fact that they're often monolingual hinders them. Even when they study completely alien grammar, they don't really get it on a fundamental level, so they bolt it onto their conlang superficially.
I think it's why I saw a thread the other day where someone was saying that getting rid of coordinating verb conjunctions like "and" is impossible, but I know that at least Japanese uses the -te and -tari and possible other forms for coordinating verbs, because I'm learning Japanese right now.
>>213141127
Conlang people just find it really interesting to read Wikipedia pages on the grammars of various languages, but don't find it interesting to actually learn languages. They'd probably get bored with the grammar of their target language in a short time frame.
>>213139318
I used to be pretty into linguistics when I was a teenager, and still have good knowledge of it. But learning a language is hard work, so I imagine fewer people do it. There is an overlap between people who enjoy studying linguistics, and people who would enjoy learning a language, and I think it does help you, but it's not a great overlap to begin with.

You need repetition. Either re-watch those videos the next day, then 3 days, a week etc. or use Anki and go through a frequency dictionary or mine sentences.

Reminder that learning a language is a meme. First of all, you can't afford to travel. Second, your TL falls into one of these categories:

>95% of the area it is spoken is a violent shithole
Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Farsi. In most of these places, it's actually WORSE to visit if you can speak the language, because more people will try to rob and scam you.

>the country is being ethnically cleansed
French, German, Swedish. Only visit if you are in strict compliance with Sharia Law at all times.

>too hard, you will never develop fluency as an adult learner
Chinese, Korean, Japanese. You will never speak or understand these languages.

>completely irrelevant
Everything else.

In the preface to his Grammar of the Arabic Language, Mr. W. Wright quotes medieval works in Arabic, modern works in French, Latin, Finnish (Lärokus i Arabiska Språket) and German.
These books are rare so they must not have been translated. This means the professor would have working knowledge in at least the main Arabic dialects and 4 other languages.
Tolkien also studied linguistics if I'm not mistaken, and translated Beowulf into modern English.

Novels were a hobby. He was a professor at Oxford and the leading scholar of his time (and possibly of all time) on Anglo-Saxon studies. I believe he also knew Latin and Finnish at the least. To this day I encounter citations to his work in random bits of English history or linguistics or myth.
