every home has a separate bin for recyclable waste (paper, plastic, aluminum) here
so you used to just throws cans and bottles in there, problem solved
but now you have to pay a deposit on PET bottles and beer cans
and you have to return it to a recycling machine in a nearby store to get the deposit back
it's a non-trivial amount, ~1/8 of the price of a beer is the can deposit
the machine only accepts pristine cans, you can't flatten them, you can't dent them
so now you have to collects those sticky, smelly cans in your home
and when you've gathered enough, you have put them in a bag and go down to the nearest store and stand in line for 20 minutes with that sticky, smelly, jingly bag of trash on your back
and you better pray that the machine takes all your cans, because if it doesn't, you have to take them back home with you and put them in the recycle bin
i consider it an extremely humiliating process
