It was a big country with nukes and a large, expanding sphere of influence, not just in Europe and central Asia, but south east Asia, Africa, south America and central america. Also if you look back on the space/arms race objectively, for a number of decades it was on par or even ahead of the west in terms of technology

You forgot the actual 5th column that began inflitrating all Western institutions and the ideology that appealed to people that weren't Russian or did not have anything in common with Slavs. Modern China looks like a joke in comparison, China can't export any ideology or new models and the best it can hope for is just overtaking the USA in importance. Meanwhile the USSR actually had the opportunity balkanize and dominate the USA the way the USA balkanized the USSR and dominated post-Soviets ideologically and economically. The current successor states can't hope to match the Soviet economic output and influence today even if they reunited right now.
