Germany may not even have started the war without the reassurance of Italy allying, but the unsuccessful opening of new fronts in the south was also a hindrance. Best case scenario for Germany would've been an allied Italy just holding its feet still and interrupting the Brits in the Med, but obviously Mussolini had his own agenda too
