Are Brazilians Considered Latino or Hispanic in the US Census?
Summary:
Brazilians are not officially classified as “Hispanic” or “Latino” by the US Census Bureau.
The term “Hispanic” refers to people with origins in Spanish-speaking countries. Since Brazil’s official language is Portuguese, Brazilians are excluded from this category.
“Latino” generally refers to people from Latin America, regardless of language. However, the US Census Bureau typically does not include Brazilians in this category for statistical purposes.
Exception: In the 2020 Census, a coding error led to around 70% of Brazilian-born US residents being classified as “Hispanic/Latino.” This was corrected in subsequent years.

Literally, Brazilians cannot identify themselves as Latino.
