Even a quick search shows a number of studies. Many use mice model however. Look up the effect of soft foods on insular people post WW2 for some examples of that happening in real time.

When you eat directly with your hands your fingers get so messy that you can't do anything else unless you wash your hands first. you can't check your phone or get anything from a cupboard or the fridge because your hands will be too dirty.

I understand having little bit of food or oil on your fingers that you can wipe off with a napkin quite easily, but your fingers getting covered in thick saucy rice must be so annoying.
