then why do I never see americans prefering kilometres over miles for that reason

Because it's nonsense+nobody fucking cares bro. Stop trying to make metric a thing. They want to keep their system, let them have it

We use km and Fº also grams, lbs., miles depending on the context and precision needed. Both systems have their pros and cons.

How can a 3d 1ml volume of water occupy a 2d 1cm2 surface? If you squish 1ml of water between two glass plates you can make that water occupy more than 1cm2.

It literally does not matter in the slightest what units you use as long as you know what you're talking about and the person you're talking to knows what you're talking about.

For reference purposes the glass plates are exactly 1cm apart.

Anonymous Belgium No.213466143 >>213467934
i've had this discission over and over again, trying to make any sense of it. the only real conclusion i've reached is it's arbitrary bullshit. tried to ask on /diy/ why a mile isn't divisible by 3 or a gallon or an inch and i got met with more arbitrary BS. ask about that and they'll simply come up with more arbitrary BS. FFS, not open for reason
>it's base 12 :) except when it isn't :) :) :)
>also cold and warm better than certain objective freezing points even though that's how our termperature scale is defined
no point in arguing with retards. point and laugh, point out the total retardation. but even then, mostly a waste of time

it gets better when you ask why there are 231 cubic inches in a gallon. the surface measurements are on the same level. they don't know, i don't know, but it all makes sense somehow
retard units for retards. they can't be helped

I don't get it at all.
You need to do insane math for simple measurements which you can easily do in your head in metric.

It does matter when you're doing precise calculations or measurents. If you're just shooting the shit with a buddy about the weather, it's fine. But if you're communicating nukular reactor parameters, then, no.

Most older measurement systems didn't use base 10, sometimes it is genuinely useful, like with inches, and sometimes it's just what it's always been, like miles

People don't use imperial because it's a superior system, It's just that the rest of the world abandoned their ancient systems because they're soulless

Says no one ever. It's good because it makes sense for a human perspective. 0 is too cold, 100 is too hot, and 50 is just right

Thing about precision of Fahrenheit is it only matters because you can say 50s 60s 70s etc. With Units I can't tell 23 °C from 22 or 24 so the scale could be twice as small and itd still work. You cant tell me you can tell 69 °F from 70

that's the thing, it's a total free for all. in metric at least it's all divisible by 10. converting a cubic metre to litres or cubic cm's is trivial. try to do the same in US customary/imperial.
different btw. iirc an imperial gallon is roughly 10 pounds of water, an US gallon arbitrary numbers. unironically try to do any engineering with this retardation

I wish money was counted like hours. Sometimes I want to think 60 centavos is equal to 1 real. We already use the x60 base for angles, hours, could use it for most other things too.

All engineering and science is done in metric here, imperial is just used for daily shit
Personally I think liters is better than oz/cups/pintd/quarts/gallons/all that shit but everything else is easier with imperial
