As it turns out, when you barely have a blue water navy to begin with, having to traverse the entire planet to go use it on a island sea power isn't a lot of fun. Russia in 1945 was hyper-optimized for ground warfare, stretched thin, and spent. They had all of eastern europe to concern themselves with. It would have taken them 5 years to build and train a navy capable of the largest seaborne invasion in human history and then transport it over to the Pacific.

Not that it even matters, of course they weren't entitled to the spoils of war. America had fought a vicious war for 4 years at that point and this island was theirs. Japan is lucky we got to them before China or Russia could have.

If anyone misses the bigger picture it's idiots who even think the nukes were remarkable for their destruction. They were arguably the most merciful and pragmatically punitive option, think about how contained the destruction was and how immense the effect of seeing them was. It's kind of like spanking a kid, you manage to send a message without doing too much injury, that's what the nukes were. If you want to see injury, you look at firebombing raids or mass destruction of entire regions.

The bombs were 100% necessary to end the war. The home island landings were projected to have casualty rates in the millions, and so many Purple Hearts were minted in anticipation that the US military still issues them to this day.
