it's literally impossible for a regular young person to move out
they keep pumping apartment prices, they became goods and politicians themselves own 10+ apartments to make money so they have no intention of doing anything about it
you have to be a millionaire to buy a 30 square meter apartment in a decent city
happens in your country?

I recently took mortgage for 1 bedroom apartment and in three years when I can refinance I will get another one. I also inherited 1 bedroom apartment from my family. I have tenants in them paying my mortgage. While boomers would become millionaires in the 90s doing this I might be lucky enough to have a livable place for a family one day.

In eastern european countryside is normal to have 2 generational houses that are mostly privately owned. You can be a low wagie and live in a nice house but you have to have your parents in separate part of the house. If your parent aren't psychos it is actually comfy, they will look after your children and you don't have to be a fucking slave driver for them like in the west.

I guess back in the 90s people couldn't predict what level of development Eastern Europe would reach in 30 years, people were more concerned about their day to day lives, especially that the period of economic transformation was quite harsh for many.

I also see people here crying "why my parents didn't buy an apartment in central Warsaw in 1995 when it cost 5k USD" but they forget that many people barely had anything to eat or struggled to find any employment, getting 5k USD would be a dream for them and if they really got those 5k, investing in a dilapidated post-commie shithole seemed like the worst option, everyone would rather use that money to get some diploma/whatever skills and fuck off to the west

The biggest landlords here are former communists that saw what is going on in the west and bought whole commie block neigborhoods owning 1000s of apartments for pennies after the revolution. Also westeners bought whole blocks of buildings in Prague. Common people had it much worse than we do now but some people concentrated wealth in a way impossible today.

Best thing you can hope for is to have good close friends to room with and hope to got they don't try to pull one of their friends into the mix.

How was it possible? Here apartments were just privatized in the sense that their ownership was transferred from the state to their occupants (in theory they were supposed to pay for it but it was a fraction of their real price, more like a symbolic amount). Buying up whole commieblocks by one person was impossible, at least I didn't hear of such a case.

>just rent a house in a suburb with roomates honestly

I did this and it was fun and everything, but economically speaking it was a dumb move, especially with the current price of apartments today

When I was a student in uni (2014) I rented a room for 250€. Doable.
today in 2025 the same room is divided between two beds and each of them cost 350€ + gas water and electricity. And the house now has twice the occupants as before. I'm. No commie sympathizer but house owners who does this (I know women of them and they're all retarded boomers that jubilated when they were 60) should be hanged.

At that point, it just makes more sense to stay with your parents for a while and save some money, then buy, but alas even the prices for buying are horribly inflated and horrible apartments filled with cracks on the wall goes for no less than 280.000€ here.

Since last year we have that system too that landlords should only ask a certain amount for the property based on a points system. Most of the landlords ignore it because there is still someone that will pay the much higher price anyway because there is not enough housing. If you want a fair price for where you live according to the law you need to force it, almost go to court for it.

The landlords companies.
I should probably have mentioned that our "landlords" aren't like some balding due who lives in the building. It's all HUGE companies that own thousands of apartments in entire areas, sometimes in multiple cities.
Companies like Vasakronan, Hembla. Stena Property, Hyresbostäder, HSB, Castellum, Akelius, and Balder. And more.
You never rent from normal people unless you're in a really bad spot here, everyone rents from within the system (aka the big companies).
And they are forced by law to provide maintenance, upkeep, government capped rents (they cannot randomly raise it etc) and so on.
So you're never gonna worry here about some landlord fucking you over. They are the ones who get fucked over by the government.

On the ground floor of the building there is a shared kitchen and a bathroom which counts towards my points even though I never used that ground floor toilet. My kitchen counter is a few cm too long and adds extra points. In the bathroom I have a huge sink with 2 taps which is also extra points. I can't even ask for lower rent because the contract was made before 1st of july 2024 when this points system was introduced
Meanwhile my service costs and rent go up by €100 every year

Living with flatmates is really not that bad. You can be unlucky and find psycho, sure, but then you can just ignore them, tell them they're weirdos or in the worst case complain with the landlord, we did that with a guy from Tuscany who was constantly drunk, smelled like a corpse and would spend his day sleeping on the couch. Or you could get lucky and meet real bros, and even girls. It's absolutely not a bad experience, In fact lived in a shared apartment helped me with my mild autism and gave me a lot of self esteem

your market price would obviously reflect your income.
it would also mean housing units would start getting buildt everywhere. even a single man with some land could get the loans and permits to build apartments or small houses for sale because it would be zero risk for the bank, it will be sold. no one wants to wait 10 years if they could just buy it upfront instead.

You're always in the queue. And yes, if you're gonna do something as drastic as move across the country you have to plan in advance. Even if you're rich and can afford to buy a place.
First you need to find a job, that alone is gonna take time. Then find a place to stay, rent or buy.
Swedes don't just do things on a whim. Maybe Norwegians are completely different, I don't know.

What I can say is that most people remain in the queues for most of their lives. I'm in several. I can move pretty quickly if I need to since I have been in the queues for years already while living in my current place.

If you wanna be a crackhead and move around every week here you're stuck with renting privately. But your wallet better be thick as fuck and you gotta be ready to be fucked over since private landlords are the worst.

everything above that is an asset. you put money into it, you want it to last, you dont right here and now know that this is the place you want to live the rest of your life and if you have to sell it to buy something else you dont want your money gone, preferably you have put some effort into maintendance and modernizing so you get a bit of profit.

It's customary for parents here to give up their homes for their children and retire to a cottage or a farmhouse after they stop working, plus they start to save up for their kids' future homes as soon as they are born.
Fuck college funds, make sure your kid can own a home right after he or she is born, it will set him up for life better than any degree. I did some meme jobs for like 5 years after high school to get half the money I needed for a house, the other half was provided by my parents. And we're not rich assholes, both of my parents are middle class people, they just simply realized the best way to give me a healthy head start is to make sure I never have to enslave myself at a corporate hellhole just so I can own a basic human necessity. The family home will go to my brother when they retire, since I already got my fair share.
Never fall for the Le Importante Educatión meme, Wanna make sure your bloodline will continue and your progeny will flourish? Make sure they have a place that no one can take away from them. I will do the same when I have kids of my own, I'll start saving up for their future homes and when I grow old I'll retire to a bungalow in the country so they can inherit my place.

you cant truly enjoy hemma unless you go borta. unironicly. and then when you return hemma you start to long back to borta. i for instance cannot get around the fact we dont have truly 24h daylight during summer at my latitude, having spendt a few summers with it its something i miss so much i consider buying a summer house up north. if i never left home i would be blissfully ignorant of this but my life would be lacking of this experience that actually improved my life.

I agree shit is fucked, especially having to even have neighbors and no yard or privacy. But I managed to grab a spacious apartment in an old renovated house, brand new inside, total rooms 8 and currently nobody else on the second floor besides me, and below just some old people and one family with a kid. No pets allowed. Outside storage space included. Building has an attic and basement I guess we could use if needed. Has a spacious private yard. Nobody really lives around because it's rented for the summer and is dead quiet otherwise. It's on a quiet street by the sea, no reason to even go this way unless you live there. All this for €500 a month. Area is fully white too. I'd honestly love to own land and my own cottage but it's a concept for now. This will suffice.

has to do a lot with how a son will just add a floor to a house then another one will raise the attic and make an apartment making it a family home with 3 apartments.

it sucks really but its cheap and our people would rather have 2 bmws on lease than their own yard and not have to fight with your 70 year old parents every day.

Jokkmokk born and raised here.
I went to university in Luleå. Closest one to me. Had to wait a year so I could get a dorm room because commuting with the bus would be like six hours everyday.

I looked into universities in the rest of Sweden but dorms had like 1500-3000 students waiting for a student flat/room everywhere and I didn't wanna wait until my 30's to get educated.

So? How is that a problem when you have 30 years to pay that shit off. Your monthly increment will be less than any rent payment.
Do you know how the rich keep getting richer? Because on paper they actually own nothing due to living in perpetual debt. They borrow money to spend on appreciating assets so they can make more money to buy more assets and then use those as leverage to borrow yet more money. The dumbest thing about zoomers is they're afraid of debt, when they should be using it as a tool.

my mom married when she was 25, she popped a baby immediately (my sister) and then my parents got an apartment from the state for free (it was around 1985)
then they traded the apartment with some old lady for a bigger one because she was living alone and didn't need it
and when communism collapsed in 1990 my parents bought the apartment from the state for ridiculous money, like 100 USD or something

There's a couple jeet restaurants but I don't really see them outside. Most foreign residents are Georgian, Armenia or similar, and they all speak Russian. Everyone seems to learn Estonian with time.

How do you draw lines™? I actually lived in Paris (okay, not in Paris proper, but just outside périphérique), my flatmate for the first couple of years was a partially deaf-mute person, with obvious social issues arising therefrom. Average Frenchoid could maybe understand 70% of what he was saying, I could understand maybe 40%. Last year it was some mal-baisées girls, who would complain about every single thing in the flat. They made a WhatsApp group and would flip out and film a 5 minute video about minor things like rubbish bin lid (mind you, the one for paper, so there was no stink issue at hand) wasn't fully closed, was pure hell.
