Eastern Europe became habitable for the first time in history around 2015 because of EU money and the web 2.0. Before that it was an almost comically impoverished and unimaginably violent open-air prison for its entire history. The horrible, subhuman cuisine of the region still testifies to that.

I agree for the most part, but Bulgaria, Serbia, Moldova & Albania ARE legitimately terrible. Bulgaria is the most shameful one, imo. Even with almost two decades of EU gibs, they've only made negligible progress.
