Because the problem is not the carrousel itself, but the fact that Russia still produces shit-tier propellants that explode at the minimal shock. Unlike western propellants that sometimes won't explode even if it's hit directly, as we already seen videos of drones hitting Leopards and others.

The carrousel is actually a pretty smart design to protect it from hits since they sit deep below the tank, the Karkhov plant design was even better since the propellants sat vertically so when it got hit by top-attack munitions, it would have less of a chance of hitting the propellant, something that they even did it on the T-14 itself.

Originally for two reasons, an auto loader is better than your average conscript at loading under stress or for long periods, and second because in WW2 it was noted that the overwhelming majority of hits occurred on the turret; therefore the lower the turret the less likely you are to be hit, and the carousel is a meat to keep the turret low while maintaining an auto loader. It wasn’t until the 80’s that top attack munitions became capable of penetrating all the way to the carousel, so most ATGMs weren’t any different than a regular round and the carousel is arguably better for that because the ammo isn’t in the turret at all, so it can’t be hit. The soviets prioritized ease of manufacturing/conscript use and small sillihouette over everything else basically, and it’s too expensive for Russia to restart or drastically alter a tank production line at this time so they’re stuck with it.

It's a trade-off to have a lower profile and to not have to train a loader (even if I think having a manual loader in say an M1 Abrams is better due to higher fire/reloading rate). The Turks are still going full sapport on the M60 platform. They got some of the final production run models so their hulls are relatively new. They have some upgraded with 120mm guns, MTU engined and snazzy new tech. But their big next development is installing totally new turrets on them with an autoloader and blowout panels a lot of ERA and updated active protection. The AVDS engine can now make 1500hp too.

Yeah. Cost is a factor as well and completely adopting a completely new system would make any money man scared. The XM8 program had a lot of problems but one of the biggest problems was that it lacked backwards compatibility with the attachments etc. the US military already had that fit on picatinny rails. I'd assume that's a similar thing that happens with any adoption of new tech.

And yeah I don't think they even have the capabilities to switch over to the T-14 Armata even when going full steam on the war economy with the difficulty in getting all the new gadgets, widgets etc. that is used in the T-14 Armata so it makes sense to just keep trying to pump out tried and true designs and drag shit out of storage.

But yeah I would agree that the Leclerc and K2 are probably better vehicles but for the most part the T72/T90 has the capabilities that the Russians need when fighting in Ukraine even if it means that some poor Russian fuckers are going to be sent skyhigh by a Ukrainian anti-tank gun
