Actually I was reading sira and some of the comments about Muhammad were shocking to me.

Which obviously implies that Muhammad was fair-skinned, but I always assumed Muhammad would have been a tannoid, perhaps not? Because there are some hadith which also refer to him as being white skinned.

Depicting moors as blacks really depends on from where the depicitons come from how symbolic they are meant to be as an sterotype sort of thing.

That painting comes from Alhambra, and if iirc it was painted by a Italian artists from the local rulling moorish nobility
If you go a century early and look at the Cantigas de Santa Maria, which was made by iberian christians for iberian christian. They depict moors and other muslims not that differently from the guys on the ceilling of Alhambra, with a few clearly black here and there. Else where in europe depicting moors/africans with symbolic black face was far more common, even when the person being depicted wasnt a muslim like the depictions of St. Mauritius commonly found in Germany

I will give to you that the bulk of Not black face moors depictions comes from art work related to Iberia, which makes sense since they live next to each other, so they probably have more authority on that than Hans the illuminator or Pierre from Normandy.

It is a flemmish tapestry iirc, commissioned by king Afonso V of Portugal. Im not sure on the exact dating but it seems to be from last somewhere in the 2 decades of the 15th century, so not exactly several decades from the conquest of tangier unless Im missing something.
