As vulgar as my post is, I think we made a mistake in not sending them all to Uruguay and annexing their land.
Wed have more land (I get to flee from brazilians into the interior) and paraguayans get access to the sea, beaches and better trade opportunities and development. Also theyd get white uruguayan wives.

and most importantly Id get to flee brazilians.

correctly me if I'm wrong but I thought your country had a lot of revolts to deal with to take care of an occupated territory. Brazil had a fair amount of trade with Paraguay during the previous decades, why not restore that relationship instead of destroying it?

Nta, but by that time the country had already stabilized. The reason we didn't want to partition Paraguay was that we didn't want a longer border with Argentina.

Uruguay was part of the United Provinces of Río de La Plata (currently a good chunk of the older Argentine provinces). But the north part of Uruguay was under the sphere of influence of Brazil during the colonial times. There was a war between Brazil and the United Provinces, usually because of who should enact influence around Uruguay (Montevideo usually wanted to stay independent because of their rivalry with Buenos Aires). Some parts of Uruguay were often occupied by Brazil, while local uruguayan caudillos supported by the Argentine Provinces tried multiple times to take power in Montevideo. In the end Great Britain intevened a proposed an independent state, both countries agreed, at least for a time to avoid future wars and as a way to enact indirect influence on Montevideo's politics. Like with the coup that sparked the Paraguayan war

It made sense to Argentina at the time to take some land for them, it advanced the frontier to their current natural borders, and Argentina is like 90% natural borders. But I agree, without Paraguay on the map it would inevitably lead to conflicts around the river transits. Argentina was anxious to bring back Paraguay into the fold since the wars of independence
