The thing is that these soviet pows, during 1941-1942, which is when the majority of soviet pows were captured (Barbarrosa & Case Blue) were not given any opportunity to join the German Army.

The policy of the Nazis at this time was to kill them by simply refusing to give them food, shelter & medical attention

It was already agreed by the Nazi aggressors even before Barbarossa that a war with the USSR would bring about millons of deaths due to the Army appropiating the food & resources of the native population

Meaning, these deaths were planned & were a direct consequence of Nazi policy

Don't think it's fair to compare the temporary Allied POW camps in literally scorched-earth Germany. The diseases and starvation that occurred there weren't caused by malice, every reasonable effort was made to prevent it.
Besides, the camps held literally millions. 5k or whatever dying doesn't even lower it 1%.

While there was going to be shitty conditions what ever happened yes, the number has to be higher than the the stated number. The problem is if you look for a historian starting a higher number there's not much decent to read other than one claiming upto 1 million deaths but that's also obviously not true
