i really hate this, the french do it too. they often artificially heighten the register or just wholly replace words they don't deem worthy to be written down. retarded and petty. like they can't fathom the idea of doing stylized writing, or i dont know, actual transcription?
do they really feel compulsed to translate and reformulate their own language, spoken by a literal french person? you are not writing a book, you are a monkey with a typewriter who's supposed to write down the sounds you hear. i want to know what's happening in the peanut brain of these caption writers

How Russian is useful in Poland? Most people from the East learn Polish, and those who don't are construction workers. I mean, it's a nice language, I like it, but still, if you think it's much more useful than Spanish, you are delusional. Even professionally, it is not that profitable to learn it anymore

It's not true. Corporations are happy to hire people with a good German or French. Although this may change quickly, because I hear about mass layoffs, probably Poland is no longer profitable as an outsourcing destination.
But professional usefulness aside. You can use Russian to talk to a hairdresser and small talk to a worker near your home or workplace, maybe to your coworker who speaks Polish anyway. How is it more useful than consuming content online?
Also, I'm sure there are Spanish speakers in Poland. We will probably also bring migrants from South America soon, I guess

I think it's quite difficult to find work in languages outside of teaching and translation. I wouldn't want to do either of those jobs, although I do have a friend who is a translator and I guess he likes it. But normally it's pretty rare to find a hobby that can also be a source of income unless you turn it into a business. But then you need to be good at business.
>To code?
Yes. And because I know AI is the next thing that will be mentioned: AI is just another filter, like when spreadsheets became digital, accountants either learned how to use Excel or they stubbornly clung to paper and lost their jobs. Right now is a good opportunity because AI is also a good teacher, you can ask it to teach you how to code and ask it specific questions, it's a lot better than how I learned (searching stackoverflow.com and watching indians on youtube).
Then you just learn how to use it to generate code faster, become good at unfucking AI slop code and turning it into something that works, and you have a career right there. Plus it's a career that can be done remotely from your TL country.

SSC and BPO for western companies in Poland with English + French or German + basic Excel. But as I said before, it may end due to AI and the fact that there are cheaper countries.
Still, if there are several foreign languages you like the same, you might as well choose the most profitable one or one with the most OG content or the easiest one.
I have a few favorite languages for their unique or groundbreaking sounding in specific music genres, for the sound or distinctive features of the language itself, for literature, cinema, for niche nerd content, etc.

I understand that money isn't everything, but if your passion is aeronautical engineering or robot programming from childhood, then you can afford the luxury of learning Italian. But if your passions are painting, sewing, dancing, gardening, playing the guitar and baking, then you'll think twice about whether learning Italian is something you can devote your time to, or whether you should think about language learning more strategically. Most people don't like their jobs, they just tolerate them.

The main issue I see is that if your relationship with the language is transactional, or if you think of it as "I just picked this language over the others because money" then its harder to make that language part of your soul. Its hard to keep an image of the language as something that you want to listen to every day for the rest of your life and want to be known as "that guy who speaks X".
The people who enjoy working a language job probably chose the language first, because it was part of his/her soul, then ended up with a job using it. But the job was just incidental.
I think to survive long enough to become fluent, you need to want to learn that language so badly that you'd be willing to give up on career opportunities for it.

>pass on overly rare words, if it's been 4 years and this is the second time you've seen "Fatuous" in English, leave it to context and study more important things

Good tactic but how do efficiently I track how many times I've encountered a word? I will have to start a spreadsheet and automate it to be imported by Anki

i've learned 1000 words on anki, i shouldve learned french, something more useful. french is useful all over europe and russia is only good in russia. 1k+ words wasted for nothing man. i watched the youtuber livakivi who did the core 2k6k deck and only immersed when he finished it. french is actually kind hard even though i havent been 1/100 as dedicated to it as i have russian because of the sounds. russian words sound how they look mostly and french looks like ill need to actually immerse but i dont have time for that

I personally wouldn't get too far into tracking like that.
For me when I'm reading and let's say I see the word "cipó" and can't remember what it means.
I'll look it up, see it means "vine", then usually remember
>yeah I've definitely looked that up before
and without much tracking or effort I know it's common enough that's it's appeared a couple times, but also not sticking in my head, so it goes in the deck

You do realize you can just keep moving on forward with immersion and none of those 1k words will go to waste right
I'm NGMI. No matter what language I choose, I can learn grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation... but it's hard to find immersive content that I want to watch. English and Japanese dominate almost all media.
Even if I aspired to watch American movies and anime in my TL, the dub quality varies greatly.
>inb4 Peppa Pig
Peppa is cool, but once I reach a certain level, I want to watch high-quality stuff.
What are the best languages in terms of contentmaxxxing (quality of translations, amount of original content, amount of interesting untranslated content, influence on the pop culture)?

In other anime, both Castillan and Latam Spanish are usually worse than in other languages. Spanish and Italian are usually hit or miss from what I've checked. You did too many cards too quickly. I did 10 cards per day and the most I ever had to spend on Anki per day was like 40 minutes, and it was usually closer to 30. Now its down to 10 minutes because I'm just doing reviews on my 6k premade deck + the occasional word I mine myself in my own deck.
>>213573074
I didn't do any tracking like that. If I noticed that I saw the same word multiple times, I mine it. If I don't see it enough times to recognize it, it probably isn't that important. And depending on what you use for immersion, it is likely to use the same vocabulary and grammatical points multiple times. I feel like my current VN has used 風俗、営業, 唯、身、身悶え、判る、生粋、and 痴女 a billion times, so I won't be forgetting anytime soon.

If data is available, wouldn’t it be better to use a frequency vocab list/deck focused on a specific type of content so you can focus on that? I knew one guy who very rapidly and casually became able to read and write specifically about political topics just through watching french content and shitposting on forums.
For my part, I found the Core2K deck, which AFAIK is based on a very broad selection of Japanese media, much less helpful early on than the Kaishi 1.5k and JPDB lists, which are tailored towards VNs and anime in particular.
Similarly, for field specific vocab, I have a feeling people misrepresent the difficulty of reading, say, a legal text simply because the general reading level would be high for a native speaker. It’s represented as if, since natives may struggle with a legal text, that a lawyer trying to read their TL legal text must be C2 in the language at minimum to even get started. IMO a lawyer, for example, could focus specifically on field-specific terminology once they’re otherwise intermediate in the language and do pretty well for themselves.

I hate Anki. I also like physical books. I thought up the following for post-5k vocab study.
As a vocab exercise, assuming relative comfort/mastery of the most common 5000 or so words: What if I got a physical copy of the most authoritative comprehensive monolingual dictionary in a given language (think Oxford) and did the following?
1. Open to random word and try to figure out its meaning from TL definition.
2. If I fail, then pick a new word that I do not understand from among the definition and try to decipher that.
3. Repeat step 1-2 until I succeed 5 times
4. Double check the 5 words in a briefer bilingual dictionary just in case I’m way off
I figure this way I would get a ton of analytical reading practice in the language while gradually acquiring new vocab and reinforcing known vocab. Plus, if I pick a really specific/technical word and fail, then having to switch to a word within the definition will tend towards simpler and simpler words until I succeed.

I mean, it's not the "no language besides English matters", it's exactly the French thing. Spanish, German, Russian, Mandarin are all unique and have their use scenarios, unlike French.

I like the chart.
- But imo, Langescheidt is the better frequency list.
- You should also grind irregular verbs ASAP. It’s a short list.
- And a grammar workbook published in Germany is better, like Liebaug-Dartmann‘s. Grinding these books is the most straightforward way to learn grammar imo.
- There are a bunch of torrents for German graded readers. But if you don’t want to pirate, DW grouped their texts by level. They have audio and exercises.
- Personally I didn’t find much success from watching and playing games in German. It’s especially annoying since often the subtitle doesn’t match. Germans are a bunch of lazy bastards. Or they perhaps outsourced the subtitling to incompetents.
- I personally recommend Deponia series for games made in Germany that has audio and matching subtitles. Foreign adventure point-and-click like Grim Fandango usually also have great dubbing. Germans love adventure games supposedly.
- I tried watching kids shows like Löwenzahn, but they are so boring. It would be more useful if the episodes have matching subtitles.

Don't wait two years to start immersing. Just start with simple sentences and work your way up slowly. You have to practice reading and listening every day in order to build up your comprehension. Memorizing words is a helpful supplement but on its own it doesn't do anything because you aren't reading and listening and actually building an understanding.
Start with Assimil because it has baby sentences and gradually introduces new vocab and sentence structures. Then move on to A1 graded readers, A2, B1 etc. it's like a ladder where the next step is learning to understand N more new words. Eventually you can handle native content with some lookups and you can chill and enjoy yourself.

It's not even ignorance, it's like Duolingo tards are afraid of "serious" resources, as if it's going to hijack their entire life, so they waste hours on a dogshit app instead.

Has anyone here made serious use of the FSI or DLI courses? How useful are they if you're not using them 7-8 hours a day as intended?

Its actually the opposite with Japanese. Most learners, excluding the Dogen types of course, don't care about sounding native, they mainly care about being able to understand the language, having enough speaking proficiency to visit, and having semi decent pronunciation. Anything more than that is 面倒くさい
>>213601926
And this. Put the barest amount of effort into learning the language and Japanese people will appreciate it.

Aiming to sound native is a fools errand. We don't know how to do it reliably, we don't even know if everyone can achieve it in theory in adulthood.
You're setting yourself up for disappointment if you do that.

Could anyone with knowledge of Mandarin tell me how good this guy's pronunciation is?

He never claims to have good Chinese, but people constantly compliment him in his videos.

not very good, but understandable. His phrasing is very English-influenced and he gets some words wrong (he said 毛巾 instead of 墨镜 for sunglasses lol)
people will compliment you for your Chinese no matter how basic it is, it's simply Chinese culture to compliment people, especially guests, a lot (i.e. say you are handsome, so clever, so amazing, so 厉害) which gives laowais and expats main character syndrome and may lead to them doing stupid shit
I got just as many compliments on my Chinese when I went in 2017 and could barely order in a restaurant as when I was there in 2024-25 and basically fluent

He's said this before, and he usually responds by denying when he's told he speaks well.
I just started learning, so it's hard for me to tell when tones are truncated or simply wrong when I hear a non-native speak. Thanks for your asessment

That’s how you should respond with all language related compliments IMO. Always undersell linguistic ability and you will consistently impress. Overselling will lead to consistent embarrassment.

How is this possible? At 40 new cards per day I would have like 1700 revisions daily.
What anki deck did you use? Sentence mining?

I mean 40 new cards and 170 cards to review. I used a premade hsk6 deck and suspended all the words I already knew. I only tested myself on recognition, so it was easy to learn a card after seeing it like once or twice.
