1. Terrible geography. We are at the edge of Europa, away from its main markets and economic center while only bordering a single country (who isn't exactly a star pupil either)
2. No resources. We don't have Norway's oil or anything that we can effectively dig out from the ground.
3. We cannot become a tax haven like Ireland. Because the EU has double standards and won't allow it, also the Greeks keep complaining about us
4. Joining the EU meant we had to axe our fishing and agricultural industries. Because of quotas
5. Salazarist inheritance. Mainly trad cath boomers and their left leaning woes, as well as a bunch of uneducated people who luckily have died off
6. THE MOST IMPORTANT REASON: Shit governments between 2001 and 2012~ which caused a downward spiral in our very modern history until 2019ish, with special note to Socrates' leftist government that bankrupt the country in 2011. Since the pandemic we have been doing alright, better than the European average and better than the Eurozone in a lot of relevant metrics, but we need a lot of catching up
