Honestly you could have included Thailand in the european sphere of influence. There were several African empires. Richest man that ever was king of one. The zulu Kingdom was technically an empire and a more modern example. The real problem is they basically never left the bronze age and when euros came to fuck them up there wasn't really shit they could do about it. And because there was no natural succession of empires or then getting overthrown most of the continent just stayed in constant chaos.
