My deductible is $8k on a two person family plan. Every year we have to spend that much before insurance does anything, which only ever happened once to me after an ER visit for a broken bone.

Realistically no one with insurance will see those insanely high bills but regular preventative medical care is stupidly expensive in a country where most people don't even have a thousand dollars in savings.

I guess so. HSA accounts help a lot too (for non Americans that means you can invest tax free money from your paycheck into an account used exclusively for health related things).

My bigger problem is that lately it feels like doctors that take insurance kind of hate you for even going to see them. And I can't really blame them for the byzantine nonsense that the insurance system creates. The only times I've had doctors that seemed even a little concerned for my well being they were running private practices that just didn't bother with insurance.
