>medieval europe
It's the fantasy setting they're obsessed with, which often comes with the castles, knights, wizards, etc. aesthetic. They don't give a fuck about the actual "medieval" aspect of it, although there's a few bits of Japanese media like Berserk that sort of do.

NO. Medieval Europeans (YOUR ancestors) would go adventuring and select a class when they turned 14 years old (mage, warrior, knight, cleric, etc). And if they killed a lot of goblins and orcs, they can progress up the ranks in the guild, like silver, gold, platinum, etc.
And the best adventurers even got recognition from the king, and might be hired to fight in wars and do other respected and difficult jobs.

Faggot.

They aren't collectively obsessed with it. Western fantasy novels and D&D were popular with nerds in Japan in the 80's same as here and this influenced their own fantasy media.

The biggest adventuring Europeans did was the conquest of America in which people from all over Europe went to Iberia and changed their name signing up to go over the ocean to fight and conquer the unkown in another continent, after that I would say the Roman period where there were dudes who fought from the swamps in britain to the sand dunes of the middle east and Sahara, yet you fags never talk about that.

Terry Pratchett once likened Tolkiens influence on fantasy to that of Mt. Fuji in certain genres of Japanese art. It's either the subject of the painting, it looms prominently in the background, or its omission is by itself a noteworthy artistic choice.

It's not like medieval Europe was all that great or anything, but honestly, the material's rich as hell.

Endless wars dragging on, massive plagues killing thousands, peasants struggling to survive while nobles ignore or exploit them.
Political games, betrayals, and moral gray areas everywhere, with clear heroes and villains for stories to latch onto.

It's no surprise East Asians lean on this, Heroes appear in chaotic times, and it's the dark ages that truly shape their stories.
For now, medieval Europe fits that perfectly. it's a goldmine of conflict and tragedy to build on.

Most western culture and traditions were birthed during the medieval age, the Renaissance, and the age of Romanticism, so its only natural that people would be captivated by it. The medieval age in particular generates nostalgia because it felt like the average person had far more autonomy and privacy. Maybe your feudal lord would demand a certain percent of your crop yields but he wouldn't care what you do in your personal life, what your opinions on human nature are, or where you spend your time as long as you were not plotting to overthrow him. Modern liberal democracies in comparison try to micromanage every aspect of the human condition to conform to their enlightenment ideas of human nature.

>Pointless strawman
Nobody said better. People long for the feelings of autonomy. Do you acknowledge that the powers that be exert more influence over our everyday lives than they did in medieval Europe? That people during that time lived near their extended family, had a stronger feeling of community, and didn't feel the government breathing down their neck every second of the day? Medieval Europe was the period that birthed most of our cultural.
