Tbh I don't know all the details of the story of the populating of the country. But Sydney was where the English first landed and formed a colony. So I guess a lot of it spread outwards from there. As far as the south west goes, there's a capital city there. North west was never really populated, but has a lot of mining for ore and minerals. Although mining happens everywhere. North east is a very hot, tropical climate. With crocodile and shark-infested waters. South east also has quick access to New Zealand, and travel to the Pacific. But I think a lot of it has to do with that being the first area to really boom population-wise, in a country that can't really sustain a large population, anyway.
