>Wherever superior races have absorbed large doses of inferior blood, the results have been tragic. Egypt is one case – and India presents a still more loathsome extreme. The Aryans in India were too late in establishing their color-based caste system, so that today the culture of the Hindu is probably the most thoroughly repulsive on our planet. The more one learns about India, the more one wants to vomit. Aside from a few professional minds, the Indian people represent such an abyss of degeneracy that extirpation & fumigation would seem to be about the only way to make Hindoostan [India] fit for decent people to inhabit.
Why didn't we listen?

I recently read most of his works that are freely available online and I don't get why millennial boomers are so obsessed with this guy. Most of his stories are just
>and it was really ugly o algo ooOoOoooO
Some of them even end in literary italicized jumpscares. He even tells the same story twice, and both times are just a rip-off of The Great God Pan. I didn't hate his stuff but it didn't seem all that different from what people were writing in the era before he was born.
>>213573398It was a fairly new type of writing for the time. Have you ever read Bukowski? It's completely unreadable without a single meaningful observation other than "work sucks alcohol is fun" although for some reason he is immortalized as one of the great writers of his time. Lovecraft runs circles around most of the pop American literature
>>213573214 (OP)He said shit like this then married a jew
>>213573492That's the thing though it wasn't. You had people like William Hope Hodgson writing weird, unearthly fiction that lived and died before Lovecraft was even born. It feels like he just got a group of butt buddies together and there's no other reason to elevate him over guys like Algernon Blackwood.
>Lovecraft chudtism thread
i'm in
>>213573732>Algernon BlackwoodAdmittedly I haven't read a single word. Although my understanding of the genre is that Lovecraft pioneered a type of horror the melded psychological and body horror in a unique way that really hadn't done before. The concepts were relatively original. Something similar happened in cinema for a while. Now body horror is pretty passe, everyone is tired of it
But I don't know his more influential predecessors. maybe it's not as new as I thought.
>>213573398I liked Dunwich Horror and Shadow over Innsmouth, however his prose and general style are atrocious which is why I never even bothered to finish my cope of the complete works.
Blackwood's best far outshines anything HPL ever wrote.
Some others I like are Bierce, MR James, EF Benson, Poe and maybe a bit off Machen
>>213573398I really like his prose, it's very flowery and bombastic, and it reminds me of Oscar Wilde in a weird way.
The theme of divine horror and insanity when perceiving god are deeply religious themes.
I assume that's why it resonated with a lot of people.
It's also only popular in steampunk reddit circles, victorian england enjoyers, I doubt that he's universally liked.

It just so happens some of his world building and aesthetics were really on point (why most things considered "Lovecraftian" were made by other people after his death) and some of his short stories still kinda memorable (I really liked Dream-Quest even though its considered one of his worst, and actually hardly rate Mountains of Madness at all).

>>213575696Of course, most people who were socialist back then hadn't been brainrotted by identity politics (or rather the only type of identity politics that mattered was that of class) because neolibs didn't exist and hadn't hijacked the entire political discourse yet. So they still held common sense values (which includes a certain level of racism).
did you know he had a black cat named NIGGERMAN????
>>213573398>Some of them even end in literary italicized jumpscaresFuck yeah, I love that about them.
His writing style is sophisticated, yet easy to digest. One of my favorite authors for sure.
>>213573214 (OP)>color-based caste systemSeems like he's projecting Western racism on India, caste has nothing to do with skin color. There are Brahmin in South India who are dark as night.

>I can better understand the inert blindness & defiant ignorance of the reactionaries from having been one of them. I know how smugly ignorant I was.>God! the things that were left out—the inside facts of history, the rational interpretation of periodic social crises, the foundations of economics & sociology, the actual state of the world today! All this comes up with humiliating force through an incident of a few days ago—when Conover, having established contact with Henneberger, obtained from the latter a long epistle which I wrote Ed Baird on Feb. 3, 1924, in response to a request for biographical & personal data.>Willis asked permission to publish the text & I began looking the thing over to see what it was like—for I had not the least recollection of it. Well, I managed to get through, after about 10 closely typed pages of egotistical reminiscences & showing-off & expressions of opinion about mankind & the universe. I did not faint, but I looked around for a 1924 photo of myself to burn, spit on, or stick pins in!>Holy Hades—was I that much of a dub at 33 … only 13 years ago? There was no getting out of it—I really had thrown all that haughty, complacent, snobbish, self-centred, intolerant bull, & at a mature age when anybody but a perfect damned fool would've known better! That earlier illness had kept me in seclusion, limited my knowledge of the world, & given me something of the fatuous effusiveness of a belated adolescent when I finally was able to get around more in 1920, is hardly much of an excuse.>There was nothing to be done, except to rush a note back to Conover & tell him I’d dismember him & run the fragments through a sausage-grinder if he ever thought of printing such a thing! The only consolation lay in the reflection that I had matured a bit since '24. It’s hard to have done all one’s growing up since 33—but that’s a damn sight better than not growing up at all

>The New York Mongoloid problem is beyond calm mention. The city is befouled and accursed—I come away from it with a sense of having been tainted by contact, and long for some solvent of oblivion to wash it out! … How in Heaven’s name sensitive and self-respecting white men can continue to live in the stew of Asiatic filth which the region has become—with marks and reminders of the locust-plague on every hand—is absolutely beyond me. … There is here a grave and mighty problem beside which the negro problem is a jest—for in this case we have to deal not with childlike half-gorillas, but with yellow, soulless enemies whose repulsive carcasses house dangerous mental machines warped culturelessly in the single direction of material gain at any cost. I hope the end will be warfare … In New England we have our own local curses … in the form of simian Portuguese, unspeakable Southern Italians, and jabbering French-Canadians. Broadly speaking, our curse is Latin just as yours is Semitic-Mongoloid, the Mississippian’s African, the Pittsburgher’s Slavonic, the Arizonian’s Mexican, and the Californian’s Chino-Japanese.*–Letter from Lovecraft to Frank Belknap Long, August 21, 1926.

Lovecraft was popular because his work resonated during the era of humans first realizing the vastness and strangeness of Space. It created a sense of human insignificance and powerlessness before the unknown.
Eventually the novelty of all that wore off and people realized that there is nothing that cannot be understood with enough research, which gave rise to the Lovecraft Lite genre.
>Lovecraft: Oh shit, a cosmic monstrosity from beyond space and time! I'm going insaaaane!
